MORE than 35 locals who dedicate their time and energy to help others in need were presented with Commonwealth Volunteer Awards last Thursday.
Federal Member for Scullin, Harry Jenkins, thanked all of them for their tireless work.
"Their contribution is greatly valued by our community and therefore it is important they are publicly acknowledged for it," he said.
Recipients included members from a range of community organisations, including the Turkish Women’s Recreational Group, South Morang Football Club, Whittlesea U3A and local schools.
Members of the Epping CFA were also given certificates for their hard work.
"During the Black Saturday bushfires, five crew from the Epping CFA tanker, namely Crew Leader David Woodford, Michael Cawthan, Matthew Gedge, Kathleen Kelson and Jess Mendoza performed an act far beyond the call of their volunteer roles," said Mr Jenkins.
"They not only ensured the survival of their respective teams, but also those of three civilians as well."
Four volunteers from Whittlesea Community Connections (WCC) were also honoured for their work – David Whelan, Jan MacDonald, Rolfe Peak and Owen Waldie.

David Whelan volunteers with WCC’s refugee driving program, where he helps people practise driving and get their licence.
Jan MacDonald was nominated for her contribution to helping immigrants learn English and participate more fully in the broader community.
Rolfe Peak was honoured for his longstanding service to WCC, Northern Care and Share, and the Lalor Living and Learning Centre.
Owen Waldie was nominated for his 28 years of service at local schools, 10 years at the Epping Lions Club and, more recently, as bus driver for the Arabic Women’s Group and Anglicare Sudanese Women’s Group.
Mr Jenkins said he remembered, from his time as a local councillor, Mr Waldie’s active involvement with new schools in the Thomastown area.
"What is common among all of the recipients is their commitment to our local community," he said.
"They set a high example of community contribution for all of us."
Three Local Sporting Champions Awards were also presented at the event, which was followed by afternoon tea at the Epping Memorial Hall.
