WALLAN residents have been assured they can expect minimal disruption as Yarra Valley Water begins construction on a 2.3 kilometre-long branch sewer to service more than 900 new residential lots in Springridge.
Yarra Valley Water’s community consultation to inform the locals about the project began on August 26 with visits to local residents and businesses.
The works to build the branch sewer began on Monday, September 7, between Windham Street and the Northern Highway.
The work is expected to be completed in approximately seven months.
The sewer will be laid along the following streets:
Windham Street between Watson and Queen Streets;
Queen Street between Windham and Bentinck Streets;
Bentinck Street between Queen and King Streets;
King Street between Bentinck Street and the Northern Highway;
Northern Highway from King Street to the Springridge development;
Along the southern boundary of the development, then along Pretty Sally Drive to the existing sewer in the development.
The works will move in stages from Windham Street and about 30 metres of sewer pipe will be laid each day.
The branch sewer will be bored underground to protect the native vegetation.Most of the construction will involve digging an open trench along roadside reserves except for three of the five street crossings, where the sewer will be bored under the road so that traffic is not affected.
Construction for the new sewer will involve crossing the driveways of some homes and businesses. People who could be affected will be advised ahead of time before the works reach their driveway.
It is expected that any driveway will only be closed for a few hours, or no more than one day.
Traffic in streets along the construction route will be affected with slight delays and some detours.
A council-approved traffic management plan will be in place and contractors will do their best to reduce the impact for local residents and businesses.
Traffic to the Wallan Multi Purpose Community Centre from Windham Street will need to be temporarily detoured to the Queen Street entry when the works are in Windham Street.
