WITH just a month left to go, residents are being encouraged to use the shuttle bus that takes Whittlesea residents to and from the Donnybrook train station.
The free trial provides three services from Whittlesea to Donnybrook Station in the mornings and three services back in the afternoons, from Monday to Friday.
The Whittlesea CBI formally launched the trial last Tuesday morning.Members of the CBI, local residents, Whittlesea’s Mayor Cr Mary Lalios and the State Member for Yan Yean, Danielle Green, were all in attendance.
CBI facilitator Jenny Ashby thanked all the CBI members, and especially Tess Wilkinson and Maree Grindal, for their work on the shuttle bus trial initiative.
She said the trial is very exciting and that the CBI has been working on the project for three years.
The bus opens up enormous opportunities for people in and around the township, she said, by giving them access to public transport.
Danielle Green, Member for Yan Yean, urged locals to get on board, saying that they only have one month left to prove the need for the service.
"Why not catch the shuttle bus and train and be in the city in an hour to get to work, university, medical appointments or day of shopping?" she asked.
"Escape traffic, parking and petrol price worries and relax in comfort with a book or a cup of coffee.
"Many Whittlesea locals use the 562 bus to Greensborough regularly, but the shuttle bus linking with the V/Line train at Donnybrook station gives a second option of a very short trip to the city in only an hour," she added.
Train tickets sold on board by conductors are priced the same as Metlink Zone 1 and 2 tickets and can be used on trains, trams and buses throughout the metropolitan system, she said.
Daily train fares are $10.60 for adults and $5.60 for concession cardholders.
Mayor Cr Mary Lalios described the trial as "fantastic" and said it makes a big difference to people living in the Whittlesea township, by providing access to not only recreational but also economic opportunities.
"I do hope this trial will prove successful and look forward to it helping establish a permanent bus link," Cr Lalios said.
"It is essential that we encourage the people of Whittlesea township and surrounding areas to give this service a try. It is absolutely vital to give it support during this short trial to make the case for a permanent service."
Cr Lalios added that she hoped everyone would encourage their friends, neighbours and family members to give the shuttle bus a go.
