A LONE surviving wombat on a fire-razed Heathcote Junction property has become a symbol of hope and recovery after Black Saturday.
And volunteer organisation BlazeAid has helped immensely on Trevor and Jane Young's 60-acre property by erecting perimeter fencing and planting out trees and shrubs.
Horticulturalist and landscape gardener, David Flower, came from Gympie, Queensland, three months ago to see if he can help BlazeAid, and he is one of many interstate volunteers to help survivors from the fire which erupted from Kilmore East on Black Saturday.
Mr Flower has visited around 50 burnt-out properties to inspect damaged or destroyed trees and gardens, and to see if BlazeAid can assist.
He said to many ladies, the loss of their gardens has been a real blow.
In some ways, the garden and tree re-establishment work was a 'first' for BlazeAid, which appreciates all donations in any form.
"It (garden work) is a flow-on service, and it is important to many survivors," Mr Flower said.
Trevor Young, a long-time musician, and wife Jane -- a natural health practitioner -- were well award of the dangers of fire, and they were extremely well prepared when the raging inferno arrived and totally surrounded their home on Black Saturday.
"The noise was like a plane ... 16 nearby homes wer lost ... some just exploded," Mr Young said.
The Youngs had estasblished a green oasis around their home and gardens, and had a sophisticated fire fighting system with two pumps on dams, sprinkler systems which fired water all over the house, and five hand-held hoses.
They put wet blankets on all the windows and were confident they could survive, even though the outbuildings were destroyed on their property near the junction of North Mountain Road and South Mountain Road.
For seven hours they worked to put out spot fires, on their own. They had no idea if neighbours had survived, or perished.
