HUNDREDS of hand-knitted blankets collected from right across Australia arrived at the Broadford Recovery Centre for bushfire survivors this month.
Better Homes and Gardens together with Wrap with Love made the special delivery for bushfire survivors from across the shire on Friday.
In a bid to assist those affected by Black Saturday, Better Homes and Gardens invited readers and viewers to knit squares for Victorian bushfire survivors in March and were amazed by the response.
An overwhelming 67,842 knitted squares, representing an estimated 38.7 years or 339,210 hours of work, have been received since the launch of the campaign in March.
Broadford Salvation Army has taken on the responsibility of distributing the blankets within the Mitchell Shire.
Wrap with Love volunteers have generously given time to compile the knitted squares into wraps with Fiona Connelly from Better Homes and Gardens co-ordinating the project.
Every wrap is made up of 28 squares, is the size of a single bed and represents 150 hours of handwork to complete in its entirety.
The goal was to deliver as many hand-knitted blankets as possible to Victorians affected by the bushfires and required a huge amount of involvement from everyone concerned.
In addition to the knitted squares, the team also received a number of knitted animal coats and blankets, blankets already pieced together and 21 fabric quilts from Queensland.
Groups from Newcastle and some country towns even made the trip to personally deliver their squares.
Better Homes and Gardens Editor Julia Zaetta said the response had been overwhelming.
"We have been overwhelmed with the generosity and support of our readers and viewers. The Better Homes and Gardens offices became a knitted mountain, we were literally inundated with knitted squares from the word go," Ms Zaetta said.
"We had loads and loads of parcels coming in every day. We could barely walk down the halls because we had no where else to store them.
"It made everybody feel so fabulous to be able to help. People were delighted to be a part of it.
"When we heard of this devastation, we wanted to do whatever we could to help these families, and I truly hope these blankets will aid in the road to recovery," she said.
Better Homes and Gardens and Wrap with Love thanked everyone for their time and involvement in the project.
