TWO students from Broadford Secondary College tested out their engineering skills at the judging of the 2009 Aurecon Bridge Building Competition.
The challenge for the bridge building competition, which more than 160 year eight and nine students are undertaking, is to construct a bridge that will hold the most amount of weight under pressure using raw materials supplied by Aurecon.
The students had timber, string, cardboard and glue for the project.
Christopher Farnay and Jaxom Morris, both in year eight, spent the past three weeks testing out different designs and putting their bridge together.
They have spent almost every lunchtime designing, creating and completing their bridge.
The boys, along with their teacher Judy Campbell, will attend the judging at Scienceworks Museum on Wednesday August 5.
Judges Geoff Boully from VicRoads and Arvind David from Major Projects Victoria will award points for bridge strength, aesthetics and skills.
The bridges will be put under pressure until they break and the bridge that holds the most weight will win.
The highest scorer will receive $1500 prize money and $200 for each of the students in the team. The second place getter will receive $1000 and $100 for the students and third $500 and $50 per student.
"Innovation, creativity and enthusiasm are things that every good engineer needs no matter which area of the profession they work in," said John de Araugo, Aurecon Executive.
"I believe this competition, held during National Engineering Week, is a great way to give budding engineers the chance to lean a bit about the industry in a way that is both educational and fun."
This year is the ninth year of the competition and following its recent success, it is now staged in NSW and South Australia as well.
