SEYMOUR Youth and Fitness Centre was recognised for its successful preventative measures against drug and alcohol abuse by the CEO of the Australian Drug Foundation John Rogerson last week.
The barriers that often exist in other fitness facilities have been lifted here.
Youths are not expected to dress "in appropriate gym attire", are not treated on a strictly "clients only" basis and are not forced to break the piggy bank.
The not for profit organisation provides a recreational service and preventative drug and alcohol program as well as a special needs program to young people within the community.
Seymour Youth and Fitness Centre President Sergio Prado introduced the idea of the centre several years ago and volunteers full-time to keep it open and functioning.
The former drug and alcohol councillor believes in promoting a healthy lifestyle to curb drug and alcohol use and leading by example.
"The solution doesn’t lie in the treatment of alcohol or drug abuse, even though we need to treat the problem that already exists," Mr Prado said."The solution lies in a very well implemented preventative early intervention program - a program that integrates prevention with a pro-active promotion of healthy lifestyles."
The program brings together youths from across the community and is a place of good conduct, respect and where many special bonds have formed.
During his visit to the facility, Mr Rogerson was impressed by how effective the program was and described Mr Prado’s ability to connect to young people of the area as "a gift"."It’s about giving young people places to connect in the community. "It’s different to traditional sporting clubs and is really affective as a preventative facility.
"Prevention is so important and there should be more resources and centres available to stop people from getting drug and alcohol problems."
Following his visit to the centre Mr Rogerson attended the Seymour Rotary meeting on Tuesday to discuss binge drinking in rural and regional areas, drug use and programs that could be implemented in the area to curb drug and alcohol abuse.
Seymour Rotary has long recognised the centre’s community benefits and, along with Seymour RSL, has made a substantial financial contribution to assist with running costs.
Seymour Rotary member Mike Laker said the centre has been operating from donations from local community groups and has had difficulties with funding."The centre falls outside the normal funding requirements and has had some problems with funding," Mr Laker said.
Mr Prado is calling out to local community groups that may be able to assist with sponsorship to keep the facility functioning.
Cr Robert Parker has also supported Mr Prado during his time on council and believes the centre is a worthwhile facility in the Seymour community.
He said that there’s a strong sense of respect shared, and that young people that can sometimes feel intimidated in a restricted setting can benefit.
"A lot of kids are not comfortable in a regimented atmosphere and can be intimidated by people in uniform.
"Young people come in and support each other and are polite to each other and Sergio … on leaving they shake hands. For young people to demonstrate that kind of behaviour, it indicates that they are learning," Cr Parker said.
