AERIAL spraying of a Kilmore East pine plantation began last Friday, despite recent attempts by residents of neighbouring properties to put a stop it.
Saunders Road farmer Leigh Speechly said he was angry that the company that owns the land -Midway Plantations - had been given the go-ahead to spray herbicides.
"Despite a vigorous campaign opposing the aerial spraying of the Midway plantations and objections being raised by concerned neighbours within range of spray drift, aerial spraying began on Friday morning before 8.30am," he said.
Mr Speechly said he and a number of residents were concerned that chemicals being used in the aerial spray would drift onto their properties
He told The North Central Review he had begun feeling ill shortly after the aerial spraying began.
"From this morning I’ve been reacting terribly, my eyes are running and I have a terrible headache … my head's spinning," he said.
Mr Speechly said he also felt nauseous but could not leave his property to see a doctor as his dogs needed to be kept inside while the spraying was being undertaken.
He called on the community to take action against the local and state governments’ decision to allow aerial spraying in the area.
"I suggest to the residents of Mitchell that our council needs a good shake up, as does (the) DPI and Joe Helper, the Agriculture Minister," he said.
"To all the normal families out there, tell your local MP and council you don’t want these chemicals in your environment or in the food chain or your kids and animals before it is too late, because that’s where these chemicals will end up," he said.
"I have been warning of the dangers of these chemicals and have been ignored by these authorities," he said.
Mr Speechly said he had further evidence that the aerial spraying of herbicides was dangerous after reading an article in the ABC Organic Gardener magazine.
"See what they have to say about the safe herbicide glyphosate (sic)," he said.
A spokesperson for Member for Seymour, Ben Hardman said the while the MP was unavailable for comment, she would urge Mr Speechly to seek medical assistance if he felt he had become ill.
"We would naturally urge the person to consult their doctor immediately (and) we would, of course, take it as a very high priority to act on their behalf if requested to do so," she said.
She also added that Mr Hardman had "… made representations to the Minister for every person who has contacted this office on the matter and will continue to do so."
Member for Northern Region, Donna Petrovich was unable to be reached for comment before The North Central Review went to press.
Midway Plantations representative Kevin Johnston said the company would not provide comment to the media.
Aerial spraying at the Saunders Road property is expected to continue over the next three days.
