THE battle for a Kilmore Wallan bypass compromise continues for West is Best after Wallan residents expressed concern about the group’s latest proposal incorporating Old Sydney Road.
More than 70 people came to the group’s Kilmore East meeting on Sunday with about half representing Wallan and a “no to Sydney Road” outlook.
Some of the main concerns included impact on residential areas, property value and flora and fauna, heavy fog and road gradient.
Wallan resident and former engineer Barry Archbold said a bypass wouldn’t just effect those on Old Sydney Road but those as far as Hargraves Court and Hanson Road.
“No one from Wallan had been consulted or advised of this option – no wonder it had 100 per cent of votes at the last meeting,” he said.
“If you live in the east, of course the west is best. This is certainly not a win-win for the residents of Wallan.”
West is Best convenor Kevin Butler said two “profound findings” came out the meeting.
“The first is, the resistance to a bypass of Kilmore is minimal,” he said.
“The second is, there is little or no resistance to a Northern Highway upgrade.
“Most people just think of themselves and their own backyards. We need a pragmatic, sensible solution for the whole of the community.”
Northern option presented
The Wallan Kilmore Bypass Group proposed a “northern bypass route” at Sunday’s meeting that attracted a majority of votes.
The proposed northern route is from the Clonbinane turn-off, towards Broadford, to Longs Lane north of the quarries, to come out at Schoolhouse Lane.
Group secretary Wendy Law said the route would take five minutes less time than travelling the Northern Highway.
“There are plenty of roads for Kilmore people to go south. We just need the through traffic out,” she said.
Ms Law said the W1 option was “too long and too expensive” by comparison.
“Anything that crosses the Northern Highway is not a good option,” she said.
“It gives people the opportunity to just use the Northern Highway.”
VicRoads hears you
The State Government announced a western option would be included in VicRoads’ current planning investigations for a Kilmore-Wallan bypass in December.
Yesterday, two VicRoads shopfronts opened to the Wallan and Kilmore communities to allow residents to share views on a western bypass option.
The Kilmore shop front is at 77 Sydney Street, and is open Monday, January 30 from 10am to 3pm; Tuesday, January 31 from 10am to 3pm; Wednesday, February 1 from 3pm to 8pm; Monday, February 6 from 10am to 3pm; Tuesday, February 7 from 10am to 3pm; Wednesday, February 8 from 3pm to 8pm; Thursday, February 9 from 10am to 3pm; and Saturday, February 11 from 10am to 2pm.
The Wallan shopfront is at 42 Bentinck Street and is open Thursday, February 2 from 10am to 3pm; and Saturday, February 4, from 10am to 2pm.
