GRAFFITI, broken glass, rubbish and mud - the Wandong car wash on Epping Kilmore Road has seen it all.
Customers are dwindling, community groups have lobbied for its upkeep and Mitchell Shire’s own mayor Sue Marstaeller has called the site “appalling.”
Wandong Heathcote Junction Community Group has led a campaign to have the car wash cleaned up for the past five years.
Secretary Allen Hall said residents’ concerns for the state of the site have fallen on deaf ears.
“The walls are putrid and the equipment doesn’t work half the time. There is always a pile of rubbish there and the general state of it is deplorable,” he said.
“Nine times out of ten you go there and it’s just mud, mud, mud.”
There have also been reports of graffiti, used syringes, broken glass and alcohol bottles on the ground at the site.
Mr Hall said the Wandong Heathcote Junction Community Group has made several attempts to contact those responsible for the upkeep of the car wash but no move has been made to improve the site.
Speaking on behalf of the owner, Alpine Petroleum’s Andrew Gell said he has responded to the group’s complaints directly.
“The only problem I can see is that it has brown walls; fundamentally it works,” he said.
Mr Gell said the soaps used in the car wash brown in the sun and the only way to remove the stains is with high acid-based chemicals.
“We have tried one product without success and we are now trialling a second,” he said.
Mr Gell said people are employed to clean up rubbish around the area three to four times a week but misuse of clothing bins and purposeful littering has not helped the rubbish situation.
“It’s the nature of the customer that’s as good as anything. Most people use car washes as a tip. You’re only as good as your last customer,” he said.
“The trouble is we can’t pay to have someone there all the time. It’s economically not viable.”
Mr Gell said he has not personally seen any syringes in the area or on the property.
Rubbish and sharps
Mitchell Shire Council’s manager of compliance and governance Colin Smith said the removal of syringes or any rubbish from a private or commercial property is responsibility of the individual landholder or business.
He said if syringes were found on council land or property, council would remove them with safe handling techniques.
“Council can supply businesses with a free sharps container from our customer service centre,” he said.
“We recommend that people have an understanding of safe sharps handling and exercise caution.”
Full sharps containers can be returned to the customer services offices to be emptied and replaced with a new empty bin.
