LOBBY group Taxed Out is relieved that months of fighting the Victorian Government’s proposed Growth Areas Infrastructure Contribution (GAIC) have not been in vain.
On Tuesday, the controversial bill – which proposed a per-hectare tax on land sold within Melbourne’s Urban Growth Boundary (UGB) of between $80,000 and $95,000 that would be payable by current landowners – was defeated in the Victorian parliament’s Upper House.
Taxed Out is comprised of affected landowners from throughout Victoria who would have been affected if the tax had been introduced, and includes Beveridge residents.
Representative for Taxed Out’s northern region, Kilmore resident Jeanette Laffan, said the group is “very happy” that opposition parties did not support the bill.
“We’re very relieved and just very grateful that other parties showed such commonsense in voting it down,” she said.
“The message has been sent – this government needs to go away and listen to people and make some major changes to this (proposed legislation).”
Ms Laffan said the government had been repeatedly approached to alter the GAIC but took none of the feedback from the Victorian community into account.
“They’ve got no-one to blame but themselves; they’ve chosen to ignore everyone who told them what changes needed to be made.”
