WHITE ants, rotting timber and changing soil conditions have contributed to the demise of two of Pyalong’s historic trestle bridges, with an engineer’s report finding it would cost more than $18.5 million to prevent the iconic landmarks from falling down.
The Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) commissioned the report into the structural condition of Mollison’s Creek and Hanford’s Creek Trestle Bridges.
A DSE spokesman told The North Central Review the independent report, compiled by the Sterling Group, found the heritage listed bridges were in a state of disrepair.
“The assessment found that the bridges, which were constructed in (the) 1880s for the Victorian Railways, were both in overall an extremely poor condition,” he said.
“Full reconstruction of the bridges to return them to a serviceable state would cost an estimated $18.5 million.”
He said the poor condition of the bridges posed such a threat to public safety that the DSE and Mitchell Shire Council had been forced to close the areas surrounding them.
“DSE is working with Mitchell Shire Council to undertake interim measures at the sites to ensure public safety.
“This includes erecting adequate fencing, public safety signage and the restriction of public access to the deck.”
The historic bridges had been earmarked for use in a proposed rail trail between Kilmore and Bendigo.
Spokesman for Friends of the Kilmore-Bendigo Rail Trail, Garry Long, said the group was ‘disheartened’ by the report’s findings.
“It’s the worst case scenario,” Mr Long said.
Mr Long said the group had met with representatives from DSE, Mitchell Shire Council and Pyalong Restoration Group (PRG) to discuss the report’s findings.
“They’ll probably just have to let them fall down on their own or they’ll have to be pulled down,” Mr Long said.
Soil conditions have changed since the drought had broken, making the ground softer and exasperating structural problems, he said.
“Some of those piles (holding up the bridge) are now sinking into the ground.”
Mr Long said he had asked if individual repair works could be done to prolong the bridges’ lifespan but was told only a full reconstruction would rectify the safety issues.
“The question was asked ‘can we just do a repair to the affected timber?’ but they basically said ‘no’,” he said.
“The response was that you could not replace individual timbers.”
PRG spokesperson Ted Robl said tourism to the town could be affected without the bridges.
“I think it could have some negative effects,” he said.
“People come from all over the world to photograph the (Mollison’s Creek) bridge.”
He said the PRG had worked hard to restore the area around the bridge, removing nearly eight metres of blackberry that had grown over it.
Pyalong resident Jack Hawe said he hoped the bridges could be saved.
“It’s something out of a very different era.
“It’s unique.”
Mr Hawe said his father-in-law, Ian Wilson, had spent a lot of time maintaining the Mollison’s Creek bridge’s surroundings but had since been told to keep 12 metres away from the structure.
A decision on the future of both bridges will be made after consultation with Heritage Victoria, the DSE spokesman said.
“Decisions regarding the future management of the structures will be further determined following consultation with Heritage Victoria,” he said.
