SAFETY concerns have forced the closure of the area surrounding Pyalong’s Mollison’s Creek Trestle Bridge, with engineers working to determine the fate of the historic landmark.
Fears that steel and rotten timber sleepers could fall from the bridge forced the Department of Sustainability and Environment to ask Mitchell Shire Council (DSE) to close Bridge Street, which runs underneath the structure, last year.
A DSE spokesperson told The Review that Hansford’s Creek railway bridge, which is also in Pyalong, is also being assessed.
No decision would be made regarding either bridge’s future until recommendations from an engineer’s report are received, the spokesperson said, with the DSE not ruling out possible demolition.
"DSE has appointed engineering consultants to inspect and report on the condition of the Mollison’s Creek and Hanford’s Creek railway bridges,” the spokesperson said.
“The assessments are currently being concluded and no decision regarding the future management of the bridges has been made.”
Both bridges are listed on the Victorian Heritage register, preventing any major works from being undertaken without a permit.
The Mollison’s Creek Bridge was built in 1889, while the Hansford’s Creek bridge was erected a year later.
Pyalong resident Jack Hawe hopes the DSE will repair the bridge.
“If you walk under the bridge and look up you can see straight through it,” he said.
“It’s something out of a very different era.
“It’s unique.”
Mr Hawe said his father-in-law, Ian Wilson, spent a lot of time maintaining the bridge’s surroundings.
“It’s a tourist attraction,” he said.
He said he was worried the bridge “might disappear” and urged other residents to lobby the DSE to do everything possible to keep it.
Seymour Railway Heritage Centre marketing manager Stephen Norgate said the bridge is an icon.
“It’s an iconic reminder of the railway,” he said.
“It’d be nice if it can be retained.”
Former Shire of Pyalong and Mitchell Shire councillor Don Paterson said safety needs to be put first.
“If someone gets killed under it then you’ve got to think ‘OK, was it really worth keeping it?” Mr Paterson said.
He estimated the cost of restoring the bridge would be significant.
“The (railway) line is never going to be used again and I think you’ve got to be practical,” he said.
The DSE commissioned engineer’s report is expected to be handed down in the coming weeks.
“We’ll be able to tell you more then,” the DSE spokesperson said.
