THE Romsey-based Leon Corstens’ stable continued its winning streak when Starspangledbanner ($3.70) saluted at Caulfield on Saturday.
Having his first run since he was runner-up in a Listed race in March, the three-year-old son of Choisir and Gold Anthem was a strong winner of the Victorian Owners and Breeders Award Handicap (1000m).
Substituting for his father, Troy Corstens gave up hope of Starspangledbanner being competitive when the colt was slow out of the gates.
"As soon as he missed the start both (owner) Brad (Spicer) and I said ‘it’s all over’ and gave up hope," Troy said.
Starspangledbanner has been known as a jump and run horse, with his only 
unplaced run being in the Blue Diamond Stakes where he was ridden with a sit.
After missing the kick, last season’s joint premiership winner, Damien Oliver, was forced to settle the colt three back on the rails.
When asked for an effort by ‘Ollie’ on straightening, the colt responded and surged along the rails to score by ¾-length over early leader Tariks ($9) with $3 race favourite Porsched a further 1¼-lengths away in third place.
Starspangledbanner who also collected the Vobis Bonus for connections, which included breeder Tony Santic’s Makybe Racing & Breeding syndicate, will have his next start back at Caulfield in a fortnight’s time in the Vain Stakes.
He has now had five starts for two wins and two minor placings already earning over $150,000 in prize money.
Sentimental win
It was an emotional win for the Corstens’ ‘Kerrygail’ stable when debutante Solista ($5) greeted the judge at the depleted Swan Hill Cup meeting last Friday.
The home-bred three-year-old daughter of Bianconi and Jiggle Bells was a narrow but convincing winner of the Maiden Plate (1200m).
The win was special for Leon and the majority of the connections as they had raced the mare with plenty of success which included four city winners, amassing nearly $165,000 in prize money.
Solista was positioned midfield by Linda Meech, until straightening where the in-form jockey pulled the filly out, wearing down the leader, $3.30 favourite In The Spirit, nearing the post to win by a long neck, with the third placegetter A Class Above a further four lengths away.
