WALLAN senior cricketers (B-grade) were set a massive target by Rupertswood in Gisborne District Cricket Association’s first two-day match of the season on Saturday.

Rupertswood elected to bat and stormed to a first innings total of 317, with opener Warren Hall leading the charge with a dashing 132.

Hall played a lone hand early in the innings as the visitors slumped to 5/87, before Lincoln Stanley (49) paired with Hall for a 123 run sixth wicket partnership.

Hall and James Ryan then combined to take the total to 7/292, before Hall was eventually dismissed by Scott Gilchrist.

Gilchrist continued to fire, snaring Brendan Buckley lbw, before Ryan was run out for 34, leaving Will Johnstone and skipper Michael Walsh to bat out the 75 overs.

Gilchrist spearheaded the attack with figures of 4-67, while Todd Keenan claimed two wickets and Steve Bell and Brenton Hanson took one each.

The Magpies’ batting line-up faces a tough challenge on day two as they look to keep their unbeaten record in tact.

Seconds struggle

Wallan’s Second XI (C-grade) struggled to a first innings total of 107 against Ashfield on day one.

Veteran Robbie Fowler was the only batsman to trouble the scorers with 32, with Peter Taylor brilliant snaring 6-16.
