LOCAL horse enthusiasts were treated to a special visit by reigning Australian dressage champion Heath Ryan last Wednesday at Whittlesea’s Mayfield Farm.
Several participants from grade five pony club riders to grand prix level riders experienced a one-on-one dressage clinic with Mr Ryan, who recently placed 10th at the dressage World Cup in Las Vegas.
Mr Ryan has also competed at the Beijing Olympics, and has worked as assistant coach with the Australian equestrian 
team at the Atlanta, Sydney and Athens Olympic Games.
Each participant had the opportunity to inform Heath of what areas of their horses’ performance needed improvement.
Spectators noticed the immediate changes in every horse’s shape and performance throughout each lesson, and some riders even asked excitedly when the next clinic would be held.
Along with wife Rozzie, Heath runs the Newcastle Equestrian Centre in Heatherbrae, NSW, where the best quality horses are bred and trained in all disciplines to Olympic standards.
The clinic at Mayfield Farm was organised and sponsored by Horseland in Epping and Greensborough.
The previous night a presentation evening was held at Whitehaven Receptions with Mr Ryan as the keynote speaker.
Approximately 160 keen riders, children and adults, attended the evening.
Mr Ryan’s presentation, "Dressage Gold for Australia: A Self-Fulfilling Prophecy", was aimed at informing and inspiring local riders affected by Black Saturday to greater levels of achievement.
He particularly spoke about the ability of Australians to overcome adversity with an incredible "will to win" and willingness to do their best "against the odds."
